Emotional abuse and neglect

Wounds no one could see are still wounds. What happened to you was real, and it deserves real care.

The harm that's hardest to name

Emotional abuse and neglect can be difficult to recognize, precisely because there are no visible marks. Maybe your feelings were dismissed, mocked, or turned against you. Maybe love was conditional, affection was withdrawn as punishment, or your role was to manage someone else's emotions while no one tended to yours. Or maybe what hurt most was what didn't happen: comfort that never came, needs that went unseen, a childhood where you learned early that you were on your own.

Years later, this can look like harsh self criticism, difficulty trusting your own perceptions, people pleasing, numbness, anxiety in close relationships, or a quiet sense that something is wrong with you. Nothing is wrong with you. These are the understandable imprints of what you lived through.

How we work on this together

Healing from emotional abuse and neglect is slow, relational work, and the therapy relationship itself is part of the medicine: a consistent place where your feelings matter, your perceptions are respected, and nothing is required of you to be worthy of care. We work gently with the body as well as the story, because a nervous system that learned vigilance needs experiences of safety, not just insight, to soften.

  • Rebuilding trust in your own feelings and perceptions
  • Learning boundaries without drowning in guilt
  • Grieving what you needed and did not get
  • Quieting the inner critic that took over where criticism left off
  • Practicing safety and connection at a pace your body can use
