Religious trauma and high control communities or families

You may have grown up with little room to question, express doubt, or discover who you were outside of the expectations placed on you.

Leaving was only the beginning

You may have grown up in a family or faith community where there was little room to question, express doubt, or discover who you were outside of expectations placed on you. Perhaps you learned to prioritize belonging over your own needs, hide parts of yourself to stay accepted, or carry fear and guilt around your thoughts, choices, or identity.

Leaving or beginning to question a high control religion or family system can be deeply disorienting. You may be grieving relationships, traditions, or a sense of certainty you once had, while also trying to build a life that feels more authentic and aligned with who you are becoming.

Does this sound familiar?

  • Panic or guilt that surfaces even though you no longer believe
  • Difficulty trusting your own judgment after years of being told it was dangerous
  • Grief over lost relationships, community, or a version of yourself
  • Anger you were never allowed to feel, now arriving all at once
  • Shame around your body, sexuality, or desires that purity culture installed
  • Not knowing who you are outside the group's script for your life

How we work on this together

I work with people navigating these tender transitions, offering a compassionate space to process what you've experienced, reconnect with your own voice, and heal the parts of yourself that had to go unseen. This is not therapy that will hand you a new belief system. My job is not to tell you what to think. It's to help you rebuild the capacity to trust your own perceptions, feel your own feelings, and choose your own life.

If your family's rigidity was political rather than religious, you may also connect with my work with adult children of politically conservative parents, or with the Life After High Control group.
